Hey, Pain is Okay.

Saturday, April 04, 2015Traveliztera

I accidentally burnt my hand when a cup of soup spilled onto it. It was boiling hot! In your head, you could have been saying "I WISH IT WASN'T THIS PAINFUL!!! DARN IT! WHY MUST IT BE PAINFUL!?"

Pain is the worst feeling you can have. It is the end result of almost anything negative you can think of-- physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually

Most of us believe that anything negative leads to pain.

So why is pain okay?

I am not saying pain is awesome and that you should be excited everytime you feel it. I'm just saying it's okay. Sometimes, it actually helps to make you feel more prepared and avoid worse consequences.

When I was in college, we were asked to read "The Gift of Pain" by Paul Brand and Philip Yancey. I was so interested in the book, and by heart, I did my book report on this.

I never really liked pain. Who does? Part of my job is to take away the pain from my patients. But this book reminded me of how important pain actually is. This book narrated how a painless world may actually bring more terrifying consequences.

Imagine a leprosy patient having no pain at all. He cannot feel. He, like me, accidentally spills boiling soup down his feet. He didn't look at his feet because he felt nothing. A few days later, well, his feet have gone really bad. But he didn't know how bad they were because he felt nothing. There was not enough pain for him to act on it. Hence, further injuries and distortions will happen...

Imagining that happening to you could have made you cringe in pain. But without pain, do you think worse things could have been prevented?

Imagine that you do not feel pain at all. You don't feel the warning sign of a chest pain. Next thing you know, you're just... unresponsive. No warning at all.

Pain is a warning. It is a good warning to move away from it. Without pain, you don't move to fix it. You keep going with how things are, not knowing that they are becoming worse.

Pain makes you realize things. You realize the value of things more than ever, and you act on it. You become more aware, more prepared, and stronger.

So next time you spill that boiling soup onto your skin, well, go ahead and say your initial words of annoyance, but thank the feeling, because if it wasn't for the pain, you wouldn't have looked for first aid at the first place to prevent it from getting worse.

"Happy are they who bear their share of the world's pain: In the long run they will know more happiness than those who avoid it." -Jesus

  1. For me pain makes me feel that I am alive and we are all a little broken and that's okay. :)
